Dog Training Assistant

Thank you for your interest in volunteering with the St. Augustine Humane Society! We want every pet to have the chance to live happy, healthy lives with their loving families. Our programs and resources are designed to fight against the most common reasons pets are relinquished to shelters. By providing these lifesaving resources to the community, we are able to help reduce the need for animals to enter shelters, helping end needless euthanasia.

What is the Dog Training Assistant position?

The Dog Training Assistant is an essential part of our Dog Training Program. Because behavioral issues are one of the main reasons why pets are relinquished to animal shelters, we are proud to offer dog training classes to the community. These classes provide important training techniques and bonding opportunities to families and their pets. The Dog Training Assistant helps the Dog Trainer with all of the required duties before, after, and during the Dog Training Classes.

Do I have the qualifications needed to become a Dog Training Assistant?

The best Dog Training Assistants are concerned for the wellbeing of animals, and want to ensure that every pet stays with their loving family instead of being relinquished to an animal shelter. If you are able to take direction well, lift and move equipment, maintain a positive and professional atmosphere, and are committed to positive reinforcement training, you will be an effective member of the Dog Training Program.

How much time must I commit as a Dog Training Assistant?

Each Dog Training class is seven weeks long. The first class is a “humans only” class where participants learn about proper training techniques and the force-free, fear-free training methods. The remaining six classes are held at the St. Augustine Humane Society on Saturday mornings, as determined by the certified Dog Trainer. Volunteers are expected to attend each class, helping an hour before and after for setup and takedown.

What are the responsibilities of the Dog Training Assistant?

  • Must be eager to learn and have fun!
  • Support the safe and positive training environment as developed by the Dog Trainer
  • Assist Dog Trainer as directed during classes
  • Maintain a positive and professional atmosphere
  • Ensure that correct information is disseminated to all participants
  • Assist with setup and takedown of training equipment
  • Must sign Volunteer Agreement and Waiver before volunteering
  • Must wear tennis shoes and modest clothing without tears or offensive content

Our mission. The St. Augustine Humane Society promotes healthy, responsible, lifelong pet ownership by serving the medical and rehabilitative needs of companion animals in our community. Our programs are designed to strengthen human-pet relationships and reduce the need for pets to enter shelters. Our goal is to ensure all pets have access to quality veterinary care, prevent overpopulation, and prevent animal suffering.
