Orange County - Therapeutic Horseback Riding

About: Freedom Ride

Freedom Ride is a non-profit organization dedicated to enriching the lives of individuals with disabilities through therapeutic horseback riding and related activities. The organization is build on the conviction that no one must be bound by their physical limitations. Through their extraordinary Therapeutic Riding Program, Freedom Ride is able to empower people with disabilities to challenge themselves physically, mentally and emotionally. The benefits which their clients reap are remarkable, ranging from improved physical strength and flexibility, on through the emotional spectrum of boosting self-esteem and rider confidence.

Freedom Ride currently operates seven days a week. Hours of operation are from 7:30AM - 6:00PM, and those hours are packed full of tasks to be done! Much of those tasks, and the greater work being done through Freedom Ride, are only possible through the self-less donation of volunteer time. Volunteer shifts are available throughout the week. There is no prior experience required, but volunteers should feel comfortable with the prospect of operating in close proximity to horses. If you are interested in getting involved with this INCREDIBLE organization, please contact us at rsvp.orange@vcifl.org, or 407-298-4180 x 113, to learn more.

Some examples of volunteer duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Grooming horses
  • General barn duties as assigned (cleaning stalls, sweeping, filling water buckets, etc.)
  • Side-walking with horses during client classes
  • Misc. tasks relevant to the operation of Freedom Ride

Due to the nature of the organization, volunteers should be aware of the near-exclusive outdoor nature of the volunteer opportunity (subject to prevailing weather conditions). Those looking to get involved should be prepared for walking, standing, bending and lifting various objects, all in an outdoor or stable environment.

Freedom Ride provides the necessary training for each volunteer position. VCI's part in this opportunity is to provide volunteers who are 55+ with a (free) comprehensive benefits package (inclusive of accident, personal liability and automobile liability insurance, a life Insurance benefit, free workshops and more) during the hours that you volunteer! Please contact the RSVP Manager over Orange County for more information: 407-298-4180, x 113 / rsvp.orange@vcifl.org .

RSVP, a part of Senior Corps, is America's largest volunteer network for people 55 and over. With more than 300,000 volunteers tackling tough issues in communities nationwide, RSVP shows how you can apply the skills and wisdom you have acquired throughout your life to make a positive difference in the lives of others.
