The SHINE Program (Serving Health Insurance Needs of Elders) is one of a number of services made available by Advantage Aging Solutions (aka the Area Agency on Aging of North Florida), a private nonprofit organization established in 1978. Funded by the Florida Department of Elder Affairs, Advantage Aging Solutions addresses many of the needs and concerns of older adults in a 14-county service area through a variety of home- and community-based services. SHINE is one of those services. You can "shine" and be a ray of hope to seniors, adults with disabilities, and caregivers as you provide free and unbiased counseling about their Medicare needss, prescription drugs, and other health insurance matters.
As a volunteer Medicare Counselor for SHINE, you can assist seniors by:
1. Helping first-time enrollees understand the Medicare options available to them;
2. Assisting current beneficiaries better understand the insurance coverage they do have;
3. Comparing Medicare Advantage and Prescription Drug Plans for those considering a change in their coverage;
4. Helping low-income beneficiaries apply to financial assistance programs that could lower their monthly Medicare costs; and 5. Educating beneficiaries how to protect themselves from Medicare fraud and abuse.
