JOIN NOW--The LAKE COUNTY MEDICAL RESERVE CORPS Needs YOU !! Don't wait until after disaster hits us, signup now.
The Department of Health in Lake County Florida is actively recruiting volunteers to join the Lake County Medical Reserve Corps (medical and non-medical professionals needed). MRC Volunteers are committed to serving our community and willing to assist in preparing for and responding to natural or man-made disasters and public health emergencies. During Hurricane Season, there is a greater demand for MRC volunteers who will provide aid to our staff when Special Needs Shelters are activated. When evacuation orders are issued, the Florida Dept of Health in Lake County will manage and staff Special Needs Shelters at various locations throughout the county. Under the direction of a Shelter Manager, Lake MRC volunteers will perform duties which will aid our staff and in providing safe shelter before, during and after the storm. MRC Volunteers may choose shift and location, as well as opt for post-storm duty.
Who is needed to volunteer?
MRC volunteers include medical and public health professionals who wish to donate their time and expertise such as practicing, retired, or otherwise employed medical professionals, such as doctors, nurses, emergency medical technicians, pharmacists, nurses' assistants, and public health professionals. However, individuals with non-medical or healthcare backgrounds are welcome to apply and can assist with administrative and other essential support functions. The specific role during your volunteer assignment will depend upon experience, skills, and an active professional license (if performing medical duties). Licensed medical professionals are strongly encouraged to apply!!
What is a Special Needs Shelter?
Special Needs Shelters (SpNS) are designed to meet the needs of persons who require assistance that exceeds services provided at a general population shelter. A SpNS is a place to go when there is no other sheltering option. Shelters may be activated during an emergency event to provide mass care for people who cannot safely remain in their home. Special Needs Shelters are intended to provide, to the extent possible under emergency conditions, an environment that can sustain an individual’s level of health.

**Although MRC volunteers are ready to respond to disasters or emergencies, MRC volunteers are also called upon to help during non-emergency times. Members of the Lake County Medical Reserve Corps will have the opportunity to volunteer for additional assignments with the Florida Department of Health in Lake County such as School Immunization Clinics, Cold Weather Shelter Duty, and a variety of Community Outreach Events that educate the public about health preparedness, disease prevention, wellness and safety. Some volunteers may only be interested in making a minimal commitment during times of crisis or for other specific community needs. These preferences are respected, given that they can be accommodated by our MRC unit's mission and work plan. There is no required commitment of service hours and our MRC volunteers may always accept or decline offered assignments.
